6-Earth Science: Long Term Projects - 3rd Quarter
Earth Science 4th Quarter Long Term Project
Due on Tuesday, May 22nd
1-Rock and Roll – Earthquake Proof Homes:
In this project you will simulate what would happen to a home in the event of a real earthquake. You will use the following materials: the bottom of a cardboard box, index cards, paperclips, wooden craft sticks, tape, fine gravel, pencils, and a small ball of playdough no larger than the size of a quarter all around. Instructions: You will place some gravel in the bottom of a cardboard box to lightly cover the entire bottom then using the materials you were given (you don’t have to use all of them at first) you will build a house. Place the house on top of the gravel and shake the box lightly to simulate a small earthquake.
Record: You will also make a chart to record the following info: Hypothesis-what will happen to your house when your simulated earthquake happens? Then record: exactly what materials (number and type) did you use to build your house, draw a picture of your first house, what happened to your house when you first shook your box, what materials (number and type) did you use to reinforce your house, what happened to your house when you shook the box the second time, what did you use to reinforce your house for the third time (number and type), what happened the third time you shook your box? Conclusion: What actually happened to your house each time your “earthquake” happened?
Bring In: Your earthquake house in the box, your chart that you made to record info on your earthquake.
